Working As a Chemical Engineer

Chemical engineers work in a wide range of diverse industries and occupations. Manufacturing, electronics, agriculture, energy, food, medicine and pharmaceuticals, and academic research institutions all require the knowledge and expertise of chemical engineers. The range of responsibilities of chemical engineers depends on their level of experience and industry specialization.

Types of jobs
Chemical engineering jobs may employ a combination of scientific disciplines such as mathematics, biology and chemistry. The core responsibility of the profession involves developing solutions to industry-specific problems and needs by using the principles of chemistry.

Tasks that the career may undertake includes supervising and monitoring manufacturing processes, researching and developing new processes and products, and troubleshooting chemical-related problems in the plant or work area.

Research related tasks for the these engineer includes working with a team of other technical professionals in a laboratory setting. Aside from hands-on work, this particular responsibility requires considerable technical report writing and scientific documentation.

Although there is a unifying principle behind the profession, most of the tasks undertaken by engineers are site and industry specific. Engineers who work in the energy or hydrocarbon sector, for example, may be involved in developing chemical applications to be used in processing renewable energy. An engineer working in food production may be involved in developing improvements in prolonging shelf life and food quality.

Education and Other Requirements

A degree is required for entry level jobs, which is a highly specialized occupation. A career in teaching and research requires a t least a graduate degree. Aside from the basic educational requirements, a chemical engineering graduate should apply and pass a state professional engineering (PE) licensure for career and professional advancement. Professional licensure requirements varies with each US state and territory.

Like other people who work in scientific and highly technical jobs, chemical engineers are expected to continuously train themselves and to be informed about latest technological innovations and scientific trends in the industry. Receive the right education and work experience. Specialized training certification independent from state professional licensure are also awarded by recognized professional organizations and groups.

Wages and Job Outlook

According to the U.S Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), the research and development, agricultural, medicine, and pharmaceutical sectors hired the most number of chemical engineers in 2008. During the same year, chemical engineers receive an average salary of $88,760 across the U.S. With regional salary averages, Idaho topped the list with $ 102,620.

Although these represent high averages in comparison to other engineering specializations, BLS is projecting employment to decline at around 2 percent from the period of 2008 to 2018. However, research and development in the areas of biotechnology, energy and other specific studies are expected to open a number of chemical engineering jobs due to emerging needs and trends.

Safety Precautions for Some Industrial Machine Parts

Some industrial machine parts are hazardous to one’s health. Many of the machine shops and factories use these materials at one time or the other. One should be able to handle these industrial machine parts because without the proper knowledge, they might cause injuries or harm to one’s health. The industrial machine parts that are referred to as very delicate may be useful to the industry as a whole, but they also take a lot of caution in handling, transporting and mixing since the mere occurrence of spilling them might cause damage to people.

Most chemical industrial companies have information on the most harmful chemicals and what to do in terms of emergencies. The basic safety principle is the knowledge of what these substances are before one even picks up the container. Thus, these chemicals and substances are stored in duly labeled containers. Without these labels, one should not attempt to pick, handle or use the chemical. One should refer to the file and look for the characteristics of the chemical, its hazards and risks. The safety hazards of these chemicals should not be taken lightly because they can poison and burn when they are not handled properly. These may not only cause property damages but the lives of the people working in the property. One should take consequences very seriously as they do happen and any experiments will not alter this fact.

Safety should also be practiced in working with heavy machinery in an industrial setting. More often than not, after having learned by heart the industrial machine parts that are required for work, some drivers become complacent in practicing the safety precautions in handling heavy machinery in a warehouse. This is where the trouble begins – when one no longer is conscious of his environment, which he knows very well is a major part in the over-all safety precautions of his work. It should not escape one’s mind how dangerous these machines are. They are even the leading causes of work accidents and the only time that one can forget about safety measures is when one stops thinking about the harm these machinery can do in one’s life. For the pedestrian, he should not even attempt to go near the aisle designated for the vehicles used in such operations. Safety should be adhered to first.

Overhead mirrors should be available for blind spots and should be used at all times. One should not attempt to hitch a ride with a forklift or a machine with similar capacity because these machines are not meant for that and can be unstable when used for purposes other than what it was built for, if one risks tagging along, one should already expect to be thrown off. The excess in weight can also cause the vehicle to tip over and create a lot mess. Without training and thorough knowledge, one can expect injuries and accidents. But the with proper care and knowledge, one can easily avoid them. One should just not be complacent and always be conscious of safety first.

Chemistry and Society

There are three significant reasons to study chemistry. First, chemistry has an important practical application in society. The development of life-saving drugs is one, and a complete list would touch upon most areas of modern technology.

Second, chemistry is an intellectual enterprise, a way of explaining our material world.

Finally, chemistry figures prominently in other fields, such as in biology, in the advancement of medicines. Chemistry in every field as a useful intellectual tool for making important decisions.

The role of chemistry in the prevailing society is of enormous benefits. We are familier with many chemicals which have become part and parcel of our daily life.

Chlorine has become an important commercial chemical. Today chlorine has turned into the main eement of producing more then one thousand chlorine compounds, which are of great importance in chemical industry, producing Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) as plastics for pipes. Other Chlorine compound are used as bleaching agent, disinfectants, solvents, pesticides, refrigerants, flame retardant and drugs.

Cholera, typhoid fever and dysentery are dengerous diseases, transmitted through impure drinking water. All such water – borne diseases are all but eliminated from most of the part of the world, when water supplies are treated with chlorine which kill pathogenic (disease-causing) organism. Chemistry plays an important role in the modern world. For example food, synthetic, plastics, medecines, soap, detergents, cometics, fertilizers, glass and explosives are the major gift of chemistry.

The applications of chemistry are much like the science itself, undergoing constant changes. chemistry is an extremely practical science of enviroment, providing our everyday needs of food, clothing and shelters. Using chemistry we have discovered pharmaceutical chemical that enhance potantials of harming our health or the environment. It is in our best interest as educated citizens and consumers to understand the profound effect, both positive and negative thats chemicals have on our lives.

We use fluoride compounds such as SnF2, Na2 PO4. F(Sodium fluoro phosphate) and NaF in our tooth pastes to protect and control tooth decay. It is a great beneficence of chemistry on the society.
